In the forty-five years between his enlightenment and his death at the age of eighty, Sakyamuni travelled through many parts of India disseminating his teachings, which during his own lifetime spread not only to central India but also to more remote areas, and people of all classes were converted to Buddhism. His final words (it is said) as he lay dying were: 'Decay is inherent in all composite things. ' His body was cremated seven days later. The ashes were divided into eight parts, and eight stupas ( :t:§= , taap) were erected to enshrine them.

Although raised amid the pleasures of the court, Siddhartha very soon was aware of and troubled by the problem of human suffering.
