Howe examines through the ethnographic lens the gender-disparate ramifications of an ethic of increasing professionalism for the sport and the consequences this has for women’s rugby in particular in comparison to the men’s sport. He attends to issues of hegemony and oppression through discussion of the homonegativism attached to the women’s sport of rugby.

In terms of psychosocial development. One stage he talks about in particular is the “ego identity” versus “role confusion” stage, which most adolescents encounter at the time of pubescence or high school or whatnot.
